Warhammer 40k: Warpforge, an upcoming digital card game set in the popular fantasy franchise, has released a new trailer ahead of this week’s upcoming Steam demo. The demo will be available between January 19th and January 22nd on Steam, featuring the Necrons faction. Here’s the full trailer:
Warhammer 40k: Warpforge was announced in mid-2022, and the devs only just revealed gameplay last October. However, today’s Steam demo trailer hasn’t done much to alleviate the division among fans.
Warpforge has faced a lot of heat for continuing to oversaturate the beloved Warhammer universe with card games. 2021’s Warhammer Combat Cards has widely been considered a very middling game, dampening hopes to begin with. Now, Warpforge’s unusual visual approach and generic voice lines continue to concern fans.
Warhammer actually has a sprawling universe, with compelling characters, narratives, and a surprising variety of genres. Even when Warhammer falters, it consistently swings for the fences with ambitious and innovative projects.
The franchise has been largely successful. Warhammer: Vermintide 2 recently added new DLC last November, and our review of Warhammer 40k: Darktide considers it “fundamentally…good”.
So, the lore has enormous potential as a card game, and it’d be a shame to see that continue to go to waste. Today’s trailer does seem underwhelming, and the Steam page reveals Warpforge will be free-to-play. This approach may result in problematic monetization, a major complaint in Combat Cards.
Ideally, the Steam demo will set clearer expectations, as fans discover the true rhythm of the mechanics and storytelling. Digital card games may be easier distribute and capitalize on, but LCGs and CCGs are still definitely viable, certainly with IP like Warhammer. Some fans agree that a paper approach may have been superior. There’s a different pace and feeling with paper.
And when digital card games can’t justify themselves, it’s always a terrible experience. The IP just isn’t enough, but let’s reserve judgment until the demo reveals more.
