Xbox has released its third “Starfield Starters” guide for Bethesda Game Studios’ sci-fi RPG Starfield, this time focusing on key features to help players survive space combat, from central ship systems to weapon effects on shields.

Starfield will roll out onto PC and Xbox Series X|S this week, beginning on September 5th, 2023. And although advanced access for Starfield is technically available now, the Starfield Starters guides continue to carefully withhold key spoilers.

This is helpful for players who are still waiting for the normal release date, which we have a detailed countdown for, in order to keep track of launch times for a variety of different regions.

While learning about character customization and planet hopping showcased the balance between the scope of the narrative and the personalized experience the devs aimed for, combat is surely going to interest fans the most.

Fortunately, although the ship systems are a little straightforward, the combat itself should feel tactical enough. Players will need to decide whether to add power through their weapons, shields, or grav drive. Also, different weapons can be more or less effective, depending on the target’s shields.

While there’s a bit of rock, paper, scissors in the combat system, there still seems to be room to outwit enemies by using swift reflexes. It remains to be seen if it can rival the likes of Star Wars Squadrons.

Combat can have serious consequences, because it turns out that although shields do recover on their own, hull damage will not. You’ll need to constantly repair your ship or stock up on ship parts.

It’s odd that players can best acquire those parts through more combat, because Starfield could wind up encouraging players to haphazardly enter battle just for the sake of it. But it is neat that Starfield at least tries to develop a sense of risk.
