Beginners Guide for Anime Defenders
Starting Units
Units play a massive part in Anime Defenders, and of course, certain units are better than others. At the start of the game, as you progress through Story Mode, it isn’t a massive deal. But as you enter Mob City of Story Mode, you’ll need better units.
If you can get your hands on the following three units, or even one of the three, you’ll progress further than without them:
- Lava Admiral
- Strongest Swordsman
- Ascended Saiyan

Earning Resources
- AFK Zone: Need a break? The AFK Zone lets you earn gems while you’re away, though auto-clickers might be more efficient.
- Story & Challenge Modes: Story modes offer gems for first-time completion, while Challenge Modes provide Star Rifts and Trait Crystals for conquering them.
Summoning and Units
Gems are the currency you need to summon new units in Anime Defenders. Each unit has a specific rarity, and the better the rarity, the better the unit. But the rarer the unit, the harder it is to roll for it. It’s a game of luck. Anime Defenders does have a pity system that if you don’t roll a Legendary in 50 rolls or a Mythic in 400 rolls, you are guaranteed to get one next roll.

Here’s a heads-up: your progress towards a high-rarity unit persists across banners. Luck potions only work outside of infinite and story modes. Units can’t be fused, but selling them earns you gold.
Gold Usage
Gold is vital for unit evolution and guild contributions. You can deposit gold into your guild bank for the collective benefit. Guilds can use this gold to expand member slots, climb the leaderboard, and unlock new guild color options. Here’s our Anime Defenders Guild Guide.
Gem Acquisition
You can get Gems in numerous ways:
- Using Anime Defenders Codes
- Complete Daily and Weekly Quests
- Complete Challenges
- Finishing a Story Mode Chapter
- Finishing a Story Mode mission
- Infinite mode is a reliable way to earn gems, though rewards decrease the longer you stay in the mode.
- AFK Mode
Story Mode Navigation
Currently, there’s no “next” button for story mode progression. You’ll need to exit the lobby to begin the next stage. This might change in future updates.
Challenges
Challenges offer valuable rewards like Star Rifts (for unit evolution), Risky Dice rerolls (for unit stat adjustments), Trait Crystals, and Frost Vials (for locking unit stats during rerolls). Don’t forget, challenges refresh every hour!
But challenges are not unlocked until you have completed a chapter of Story Mode. So Windmill Village has to be completed, and you have started Mob City for Windmill

Trait Rerolling
You can add a trait to a unit, which is a passive buff that can massively increase the power of a unit. However, these require Trait Crystals, and the number of crystals you need depends on the unit’s rarity. Find out everything you need to know about Trait Rerolling in our Anime Defenders Traits Guide.
Trading
Trading: Once you hit level 10, you’ll unlock the trading hub! Here, you can trade units, including shinies, with other players.
Trade various in-game items like gems, Robux, and dice with other players. Only shiny and secret units can be traded, and their traits are transferred along with them. A community trading value list exists online to help you gauge fair trades.
Unit Customization
Shiny Cosmetics: Keep an eye out for shiny units! These special units have unique cosmetics you can equip to them.
Units can Evolve
Certain units can evolve by crafting specific items in the crafting section of the summoning area. These all require Star Rifts and a lot of money. For how to get Star Rifts, use our guide here: How to Get Star Rifts in Anime Defenders.

So, to upgrade Esper, for example, you need to craft Esper’s Spirit, which costs:
- x7 Star Rift (Blue)
- x7 Star Rift (Red)
- x25 Star Rift (Yellow)
- x5 Star Rift (Purple)
- x6 Star Rift (Green)
- x2 Star Rift (Rainbow)
