The announcement trailer for Classified: France ’44, which was released back in May, was purely cinematic and ultimately failed to spark interest among many casual gamers. War games, particularly those determined to use historical accuracy, have to work harder to distinguish themselves.
Today’s trailer shows off a few interesting mechanics, but it remains to be seen in there are enough twists to build traction outside of players who are already fans of the genre.
Damaging morale is definitely a nice touch, and today’s gameplay reveals that it can even cost enemies their turn. Giving characters more action points isn’t exactly revolutionary, but there’s a surprising emphasis on stealth. Hiding in foliage and overwatch are neat little additions that should improve quality of life.
The most compelling reveal might be the long-term decisions, where players are free to choose their own missions, and which factions to support. The game actually feels more like a ticking clock for D-Day, and that urgency really should’ve been emphasized in the trailers. That kind of scope is more interesting than straying from one battle to the next in a linear story.
