Divine Knockout, a fighting platformer available on PC, Xbox, and PlayStation, has just announced that a sneak peek for the next God will be revealed during the SMITE World Championship on January 13th, 2023. An official tweet from Divine Knockout’s feed adds that fans should tune in around 1:30 PM eastern time for the sneak peek:
Hi Rez Studios contributed to both Divine Knockout and SMITE, which is why they have a similar flavor. Both titles are also third person twists on a familiar genre, Super Smash Bros. clones and MOBAs respectively.
SMITE first launched nearly a decade ago, so player interest has naturally dwindled over the years. However, there have been a series of successful collaborations with surprising IP like Nickelodeon. Also, a lot of the original content continues to boast interesting new characters, largely due to their inspiration from real mythology. It’s always a treat to see how each adaptation will unfold.
However, SMITE has probably developed one too many characters, which can sometimes feel overwhelming to new players. And sadly, it seems that Divine Knockout is also beginning to get ahead of itself. Every new release doesn’t have to coincide with another God.
New playable characters are generally great content, especially when most free-to-play games would rather concern themselves with cosmetics. But Divine Knockout barely launched last October, and its frenetic update pacing could easily result in unbalanced characters. Some breathing room would be nice for players and game to adapt.
Fortunately, new maps and modes will greatly benefit the game. The devs released a new roadmap for 2023 last month, and there are several new upcoming features, such as Quests, that will bolster the replay value more than enough. Of course, some fans of Hi Rez Studios both expect and enjoy a vast roster.
