Naheulbeuk’s Dungeon Master, an indie strategy sim about running a fantasy dungeon lair from developer Artefacts Studio and publisher Dear Villagers, has a new gameplay trailer. Some amusing narration from the main characters breaks down key features like hiring “less useless” personnel, furnishing your dungeon and more.
Naheulbeuk’s Dungeon Master hasn’t confirmed a release date, but it’s expected in “Summer 2023”, so it should launch within the next month or so barring delays.
Publisher Dear Villagers is likely best known for Fort Solis right now, which only just released earlier this week. Unfortunately, it’s been met with some mixed reviews, largely due to pacing that some fans consider a walking sim.
However, Naheulbeuk’s Dungeon Master seems to have a bit more ingenuity, if not the easiest title to remember. It also confidently wields corporate satire in its basic premise and mechanics, as well as today’s trailer.
It’s often a delight when devs appear to be letting off some steam about soulless office attitudes. Indies like Devolver Digital’s Stick it to the Stickman or Magic Design Studios’ Have a Nice Death can muster some clever, biting commentary. Today’s trailer for Naheulbeuk’s Dungeon Master includes very cynical narration about cutting corners, which is a little on the nose. But the questionable business practices could lean closer to something like Two Point Campus, which just added a Medical School DLC last week.
In fact, the art design also quite resembles the Two Point Studios series, and Dungeon Master could succeed if it’s half as inventive. The fantasy setting opens the door to pretty much anything, akin to titles like Simon the Sorcerer Origins, the fantasy comedy slated to release next year.
Also, Dungeon Master’s Steam page mentions that players will need to defend the tower they build, too, so it shouldn’t feel like just another tycoon game with some jokes.
