Lempo, an upcoming horror exploration game influenced by Finnish mythology, has received a brand-new trailer today. Expected to launch in 2023, a release window still hasn’t been confirmed. However, today’s trailer concluded with a tease that it should be “coming soon”:
Lempo was developed by One Trick Entertainment, and basically overlooked until today’s big feature. Although the game released its first teaser months ago, the devs haven’t acquired a notable audience. They deserved their new recognition, since Lempo has some very promising qualities.
To begin with, indies that draw from cultural influences don’t just provide great representation and unity, but also a noticeable personality.
Similarly, PlayStation recently released a trailer for a Skabma Snowfall port, inspired by Nordic culture. It was also published by PID Games, who are publishing Lempo. PID Games is probably best known for Elypse or Alba: A Wildlife Adventure.
Finnish mythology is an area that hasn’t appeared very much, if at all. Certainly compared to Viking or Greek mythology, which have recently been mined quite a lot in the industry. For example, Divine Knockout will release Zeus soon according to their recent 2023 roadmap.
Lempo intends to focus on exploration, as well as light puzzles. These are potent elements that create genuine tension, because it maintains an overall sense of mystery and urgency.
Players also seem to have very limited resources. A defenseless protagonist always boosts horror, and usually demands a little more stealth. Of course, the trailer also falls back on the creepy radio voice trope, but it’s still just a trailer. If the setting and premise don’t hook you, there does seem to be some compelling imagery, music, and mechanics at work here.
