Dr. Fetus’ Mean Meat Machine, an upcoming tile-matching indie from Headup Development and Thunderful Publishing, just released its full animated intro scene. Although a release date hasn’t been confirmed, Dr. Fetus’ Mean Meat Machine is expected to launch this year on PC and consoles.

The amusing intro scene features the titular Dr. Fetus waiting around for a progress bar, either preparing tools or just messing around. Here’s the full intro scene from Thunderful Games’ YouTube channel:

Super Meat Boy Forever may have just announced that it will be available mobile devices later this month, but its mechanics got a lot of fan backlash. After all, it disrupted the flow and freedom of the original, which is still considered a classic thanks to its bombastic gameplay and unabashed strangeness.

So, Dr. Fetus’ Mean Meat Machine has a lot of baggage and may have an uphill battle gaining traction with fans, even if it is a new genre altogether.

Today’s trailer is genuinely funny, thanks to a meta premise about loading times that everyone can relate to, even if they aren’t waiting for Dr. Fetus’ Mean Meat Machine itself. The down time also showcases a side of Dr. Fetus’ personality that you rarely see.

It’s all very playful, simple, and superbly animated. Fans of the series should enjoy the animation alone, if not the game. But intro scenes say a lot about the tone fans should expect, just like the intro reveal for Dead Island 2.

Tile matching is a pretty tired genre, which probably needed the mayhem and attitude of Super Meat Boy’s universe. It remains to be seen just how well Dr. Fetus’ Mean Meat Machine can escalate its traps. Otherwise, the genre has a serious risk of redundancy, because its mechanics are fundamentally simple.
