Necesse, an indie action-adventure set in a procedurally generated world from developer Mads Skovgaard, will now be published by Hooded Horse. The publisher announced it in a new tweet today, marking a major milestone for a small game that first launched into Early Access in December 2019.

Hooded Horse is likely best known for their hit strategy series Xenonauts. Xenonauts 2 is currently slated to release next month and revealed a gameplay trailer in January. You may also recognize Hooded Horse for Against the Storm, Fragile Existence, or Beyond These Stars, which was announced in February.

Necesse is available now on PC. You can watch the publisher’s new gameplay trailer for Necesse on their official YouTube channel:

Necesse has grown a lot over the years, consistently tuning up the technical side. This has been highly beneficial for a game that thrives on its automation.

Although the trailer doesn’t sell it that way, many fans have praised just how accessible the management feels with settlers that automatically work. It really streamlines the gameplay loop, so that players can still enjoy building a settlement without running down a checklist of every minor job.

This should have been front and center in today’s trailer, because otherwise, the gameplay likely resembles one too many sandbox colony sims. There have been comparisons to Terraria and Rimworld, even while it successfully elaborates on both.

The world and lore of Necesse just feels a little broad. But the enemies and bosses are a particular standout. They’re challenging and surprising, and they’re definitely a highlight in today’s trailer.

Necesse should please fans of the genre with its breadth of content and flexible mechanics. It would be great to see the audience and supported platforms expand after joining Hooded Horse.
