Quantum: Recharged, a modern version of the arcade action classic from developer SneakyBox and publisher Atari, will officially release on August 17th, 2023. The announcement came with a gameplay teaser, which hints at features like local co-op and showcases the dazzling new visuals.
It will be available on PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store, or on console via Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. You can watch today’s release date trailer on the Atari YouTube channel:
The original Quantum boasts a very clever premise, where players need to use their ship to encircle targets. It’s an inventive way to compel players to be more strategic, rather than resorting to the panicked gunfire in traditional arcade games.
The result feels more like a survival game than a shooter, and Quantum: Recharged seems to capture that spirit. And although cooperative gameplay looks very complicated, it also opens the door to some creative new strategies. It would just take some very, very coordinated friends.
Surprisingly, today’s trailer doesn’t delve too much into the full array of new features. Atari’s long-running Recharged series has implemented a lot of neat additions to the classics rather than altering them too much, which is much appreciated.
But the official website for Quantum: Recharged mentions that it will expand gameplay with “a wider variety of deadly enemies and some new moves”. It would’ve been helpful if the trailer concentrated on that too.
Quantum: Recharged is an excellent selection for a modern update, and a smaller, overlooked gem akin to Caverns of Mars: Recharged, which released in March. However, Atari is still introducing new titles lately, such as the apocalyptic roguelite Days of Doom, which was announced last May.
