Devin Hedegaard (also known as FlashShifter), the creative mind behind the immensely popular Stardew Valley Expanded mod, has taken his passion to the next level, transitioning from an enthusiastic hobbyist to a full-time mod developer. His dedication to expanding the world of Stardew Valley and the unwavering support of the game’s community has paved the way for this remarkable transformation.

In his interview with Polygon, Hedegaard spoke about not knowing the game existed working on the most popular mod for the game, and finally being able to work full-time on it. We’ll go over that part below.

Hedegaard’s journey with Stardew Valley began in 2017 when he stumbled upon the game while seeking a fresh start after graduating from college. His brother was playing the game on the PS4. Intrigued by its pixelated charm and farming-focused gameplay, he dove into the game, becoming engrossed in its captivating world.

As Hedegaard immersed himself in Stardew Valley, the desire to further enrich the game’s experience took hold. After completing the game multiple times, he turned to modding as a means of extending his Stardew Valley adventure. To learn the intricacies of coding, scripting, and pixel art, Hedegaard embarked on a self-taught journey.

If you’ve ever read Blood, Sweat, and Pixels: The Triumphant, Turbulent Stories Behind How Video Games Are Made by Jason Schreier, you’ll know this is extremely similar to how Eric Barone – the creator of Stardew Valley – first learned game development.

The first iteration of Stardew Valley Expanded emerged in 2019, introducing a variety of new characters, locations, events, crops, fish, and furniture. The mod was met with an overwhelmingly positive response from the Stardew Valley community, garnering over 1.8 million downloads on Nexus Mods, solidifying its position as the most popular content mod for the game.

Initially, Hedegaard developed Stardew Valley Expanded alongside his accounting job. However, the mod’s immense popularity and the dedication it demanded led him to pursue mod development full-time. In 2021, Hedegaard opened a Patreon account and a PayPal donations page, providing a means for community members to support his work directly. As a result of this financial support, Hedegaard was able to devote his time and energy to expanding the world of Stardew Valley to a wider audience.

The Stardew Valley Expanded subreddit and Discord server, boasting over 19,000 members, serve as vibrant hubs for discussion, feedback, and camaraderie among fans of the mod. Hedegaard actively engages with the community, incorporating their suggestions and feedback into the mod’s development process.

Currently, Hedegaard is hard at work on the highly anticipated 2.0 update for Stardew Valley Expanded. This major update promises to introduce a new magic-themed location, further flesh out the story of the beloved witch Camilla, and add a host of other exciting features.
