Nintendo has released their last Inside the House of Indies: Holiday Event showcase, which premiered all week on their official YouTube channel. Today, the featured games included Dust & Neon, UNDYING, Sea of Stars and Sports Story.
The event concluded with a surprise announcement for an Indie World Holiday Sale, which is live now and will run through January 1st, 2023, 11:59 PM. You can watch the full video from today’s showcase here:
Dust & Neon
This roguelite blend of sci-fi and the Wild West was announced back in August. Today, it announced a release window for early 2023.
The western genre has become surprisingly popular recently, between Hard West 2, Wild West Dynasty, and the massive success of Evil West, which just released new patch notes. However, Dust & Neon’s combination of a Westworld setting with the arcade charm helps it stand out amidst the busy indie scene. The twin-stick twist and simplicity should appeal to more casual gamers.
UNDYING
This indie adventure was a hit when it released last year, thanks to its sincere and emotional twist on the zombie genre. The story centers on a mother protecting her child. Fans really praised this genuine approach, which bears similarity to Endling – Extinction is Forever, which announced a mobile port earlier this week. Today, UNDYING announced a Spring 2023 release window for a new Nintendo Switch port.
Sea of Stars
In a welcome surprise, Nintendo’s showcase included a brief interview with Yasunori Mitsuda, the composer for this turn-based fantasy RPG. Music can sometimes be overlooked by casual gamers, so it was great to hear a little about Mitsuda’s process. Sea of Stars was delayed to 2023 back in June 2022, and unfortunately, a new release window still wasn’t confirmed in today’s showcase.
Sports Story
Sports Story celebrates sports in general, so there’s something for everyone. The pixel art is hardly revolutionary, but combing the sports genre with an emphasis on storytelling is pretty unique. There’s also enough variety of mini-games and more to make the game more accessible.
Last month, this narrative-driven RPG with a retro art design was featured on Nintendo’s Indie World Showcase. It announced a December 2022 release date, and suddenly launched today with an announcement on today’s Holiday Event.
