Pokémon Scarlet and Violet have prepared a challenging time-limited Tera Raid event in which players may have the chance to battle a Four- and Five-Star Tyranitar and Salamence Tera Raid. Salamence‘s spawn rate will increase exclusively in Pokémon Violet Tera Raid battles. Salamence will emerge in a variety of Tera types, so it’s best to participate in as many raids as possible to get them all. If you are facing a Salamence with Dragon/Flying Tera Type, Chien-Pao might be an excellent pick.

Chien-Pao is a Dark, Ice-type legendary Pokémon that has an incredible Base Atk. stat of 130 and Base Speed stat of 135. As such, it can hold up well and even solo a Salamence with Dragon/Flying Tera type. If you want to know the best Chien-Pao build for the Salamence Tera Raid, this guide has you covered!

To make the most out of Chien-Pao and succeed in the Salamence Tera Raid, you must know the best moveset and held item for this Pokémon. In addition, it is ideal for Chien-Pao to have an Ice Tera Type to double the power of its Ice-type STAB.

Chien-Pao’s Sword of Ruin allows its ruinous sword to lower the Defense stats of all Pokémon even those on its team, except itself, making it suitable for solo raids. Chien-Pao should also have Ice Spinner, its strongest Ice-type STAB move that allows it to cover its feet in thin ice and twirl around, slamming into the target. This also provides utility by removing terrain. Chien-Pao should also have an Ice Shard move which enables it to freeze chunks of ice and hurls them at the target.

It is also ideal to give Chien-Pao a Jolly Mint to maximize its incredible Speed stat. In the Salamence Tera Raid, Chien-Pao should also have a Focus Sash held item to allow it to endure one potential KO attack, while at full HP, by leaving 1 HP. Focus Sash is available at the Delibird Presents shop in Mesagoza.

This is TERRIBLE advice! Focus Sash is completely useless in Raids as you will almost never get one shot. You’re better off with a Shell Bell to recover massive HP from the raid boss, a choice item to increase your power or leftovers for passive recovery. Also why the heck would you ever use Ice Shard in a raid? It’s a low-damage priority move and unless Salamence uses Dragon Dance a bunch of times and you can somehow use it to secure a last-minute KO, you’re always better off using Icicle Crash or Ice Spinner. And Chien Pao is arguably not even great for this raid anyway since it’s not bulky and Salamence hits hard. Plus Tera Raids are always mojo-type so no Pokémon is ever 4x weak to anything anyway.
